High stiffness
3D printing

High stiffness plastics and metals with a Modulus of Elasticity greater than 2 GPa, available in all 3D printing processes.

Material Jetting High stiffness Materials

Material Jetting produces parts of the highest dimensional accuracy with very smooth surface finish, used for both visual prototypes and tooling manufacturing.

Benefits and Limitations

Smooth, injection molding-like finish

Brittle, not recomemended for functional parts

Characteristics

Price $$$$$ Tolerance ± 0.1% (min: ± 0.05 mm)
Turnaround time < 5 days Wall thickness 1.0 mm
Max part size 100 x 80 x 50 cm Layer height 16 - 32 μm

Digital ABS

Digital ABS (Material Jetting) mimics the properties of ABS and produces stiff, rigid parts for engineering applications. Greater detail than Tough Resin (SLA).

Material family

SLA/DLP High stiffness Materials

SLA is most suitable for visual applications where an injection mold-like, smooth surface finish, and a high level of feature detail are required.

Benefits and Limitations

Smooth, injection mold-like, surface finish

Brittle, not recommended for functional parts

Characteristics

Price $$$$$ Tolerance ± 0.5% (min: ± 0.1 mm)
Turnaround time < 2 days Wall thickness 0.5 mm
Max part size 150 x 75 x 50 cm Layer height 25 - 100 μm

Tough resin (ABS-like)

Tough resin (SLA) mimics the properties of ABS and produces parts with improved mechanical properties compared to standard resin. Can be used for functional parts.

Material family

Ceramic filled Resin

Ceramic filled resin (SLA/DLP) produces parts with very high stiffness and higher detail than Tough or Durable resin. Good temperature resistance.

Material family

FDM High stiffness Materials

FDM is the most widely available 3D printing process, mainly used for low-cost prototyping and design verification with very fast turn around times.

Benefits and Limitations

Fast turnaround times

Print layers are likely to be visible

Characteristics

Price $$$$$ Tolerance ± 0.5% (min: ± 0.5 mm)
Turnaround time < 2 days Wall thickness 0.8 mm
Max part size 100 x 100 x 100 cm Layer height 50 - 400 μm

Carbon-fiber reinforced Nylon

Carbon-fibre reinforced Nylon (FDM) contains continuous carbon fibers that give extremely high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio comparable to metal.

Material family

Carbon filled Nylon

Carbon filled Nylon (FDM) has excellent stiffness and good temperature resistance. Ranks between standard Nylon and continuous Carbon-fiber reinforced Nylon.

Material family

Fiberglass reinforced Nylon

Fiberglass reinforced Nylon (FDM) contains continuous glass fibers that give high stiffness and excellent heat resistance. Ideal for high temperature applications.
