Full Color Sandstone doesn’t allow for protruding features smaller than 3 millimeters because of the brittleness of the material. Also walls have to be wider than 2 millimeters.

Design rules to remember when printing with Full Color Sandstone

SLS design rule: Embossed and engraved details

0.4 MM

For embossed and engraved details, we recommend a minimum line thickness of 0.4 mm and a depth of 0.4 mm.

Tip: if you are putting text on your design, use a bold sans-serif font for readability, such as Arial Bold.

2.5 MM DIAMETER FOR ONE ESCAPE HOLE, 1.5 MM FOR TWO OR MORE

As Full Color Sandstone is built up from powder, all the cavities in your design will be filled with powder. It’s a good idea to hollow your model to save costs and add some holes for the powder to escape.

Tip: having multiple holes makes it easier for the powder to escape, as we can carefully blow air through you model.

Binder Jetting is one of the 3D Printing processes with the highest accuracy; up to 0.4 mm is enough to create clearly visible details.

The minimum feature size for printing with Full Color Sandstone is 3 mm. If your feature is a thin wire connected on both sides, you can go slightly thinner to 2 mm, otherwise we recommend at least 3 mm thickness.

0.9 MM CLEARANCE BETWEEN PARTS

A powerful feature of Full Color Sandstone is that you can have moving or interlocking parts printed in one go. In order for the parts to come loose you need to keep a 0.9 mm clearance.

Tip: if you have moving parts like axles or hinges over a long distance you need to increase your clearance or create extra escape holes for the powder to get out.

Full Color Sandstone is printed by binding together powdered material using a binding agent. The powder acts as support material while building up your print, therefore no support structure is needed, providing you with maximum form freedom.

Wall thickness

3 MM (OR 2 MM IF SUPPORTED)

The model's wall must be thick enough to support the model. We recommend working with a minimum wall thickness of 2 mm when the wall is connected to other walls on two or more sides, and 3 mm if it’s only connected one side.

Full color sandstone is printed using Binder Jetting technology

Binder Jetting uses thin layers of powder to build up a 3D model. A colored binding agent extruded from a nozzle binding the powder together, solidifying the object with the desired colored surface. After the printing process, the models are strengthened with superglue and UV coated to prevent de-coloration by sunlight.

The advantage of this process is that the excess unmelted powder acts as a support to the structure as it is being produced which allows for complex shapes to be made and no additional supports are required.
