I have spent the past 2 weeks playing with Filamentive exotic Carbon Fiber and Woodfil filaments and I wanted to share my results on here. I want to talk about their Carbon Fiber filament because I have had a few questions on some of the prints I have posted on social media, more specially the CF skull that I polished.
To get the shine I have found with finishing prints is a good base setting, these are very close to the Filamentive recommended settings.
Print Speed: 55mm/s
Nozzle Diameter: .5 brass
Layer Resolution: 200 microns
For finishing I used a range of sandpaper from 150 grit to knock down the 200 micron layer height up to 2000 grit wet and dry to buff out all the scratches from the sandpaper grits in between. When you get to 2000 grit you should start to have a nice shine. From there I applied about 10 thin coats of polyurethane and roughed out the surface in between with 1000 grit sandpaper. After I was satisfied with the polyurethane I decided to use what I had laying out and use Nu Finish car polish to polish the final product.
I have posted a video on youtube
Here is the print unfinished of the bed and finished with polish
