I’m trying to use maya (program I know the best) to build a 3d printed part for a project and the file scaled in maya right but when I uploaded them the size changes. can anyone help me?
The part should be 79.62mm x 143.40mm x 3.19mm D with a tolerance of ± 1 mm.

hi Adam, here’s what i’d do (i actually do this all the time with blender) make a cube in maya that’s considered 20mm 20mm 20mm and then export that out to either makerware or cura until you end up with a 1:1 scale, adjusting the settings as needed. here’s what it looks like for me in blender speak my world scale in mm is set 0.001 and i export out an stl at a scale of 1.

also the lazy man’s cheat is taking the dimension of one side of your object and manually typing it in with uniform scale turned on and problem solved. I did go ahead and edit the dimensions to what you listed to save you a little bit of time

I have seen this happen probably over a hundred times now. You have correctly modeled your object in the right dimensions, but when it gets imported to be sliced the file shrinks. This happens everytime with people using more advanced software such as CATIA, Solidworks, Inventor, Maya, etc. But the fix is simple the model just needs to be scaled 1000% in the slicer program. So I don’t understand your question, because it isn’t really much of a problem as it is easy to rescale.

One suggestion is to make sure that when you are exporting your file from Maya, to look into the settings / options and make sure that the settings are keeping the right size when exporting.

Mayas default unit size is cm. Just build your model with that in mind. Use a cube as reference if you have to. When you make a cube do not scale it but instead modify the history to adjust the size. Last thing is make sure and freeze transforms on your object. Also ungroup your model to be safe or freeze any parent groups. If anything you might have to scale it 10x depending on the slicing software’s unit settings.

Hi Adam, I don’t know if you’ve already solved your issue, but one way I think is the easiest to remedy this issue is to tuse netfabb basic. You can import your model to it, then scale it using the program, and then re-export your model as an asci .stl file. You will get pretty darn good results. I run every model I make throught netfabb atleast once during my design process. Hope this helps!
