Hi guys,

This is a response to the other thread I posted ‘Help needed with prints stopping’ that is just a summary of the problem and tests I ran to help others (I thought it might get lost as a reply to that thread).

The problem I was having was that the extrusion was stopping sometime during the printing process (the extruder and motor was also still running etc) with my enclosed Makerbot Replicator 2X.

I tried:

1. Removing the lamp I had directed into the enclosure for extra heat-little effect

2. Increasing the extrusion temp-little effect

3. Various infill/layer settings-no effect

4. Acetone/abs slurry to stop warping (worked on bed adhesion but no effect on extrusion)

5. Swapped out fans, temp sensors, heater elements, nozzles-little effect

6. Removed top enclosure-Dramatic success no failed prints since (including an 8 hour print that had failed 5 times in a row before this)

Conclusion:

The heated enclosure was getting too hot causing the filament to soften and then the motor would strip the filament and the print would stop. Interestingly this didn’t happen with the NinjaFlex filament (I ran four 10 hour successful prints in a row) so it seems the NinjaFlex has a smaller temperature range where it gets soft compared to the ABS.

A big thanks to @Aaron_Slattery @Erebor_Printing @mudslag @FancyPrinter107 @Costruire3D @clausgudum @George_Kypriano @lalap and a special thanks to @bumsarama who came up with the solution for my particular problem (and to anyone one else I missed).

Cheers guys and print on!

Andrew
