i imported a stl file to Maya 2016 but it looks off so i researched and looked for some info about it , i think the mesh should be in quads i guess now it’s in triangles. that led me to the phrase “Retopology”

this is the info as far as i know . but i don’t know how to fix the issue.

The smoothing groups of the stl look like they did not import correctly. Try clearing the smoothing groups and then regroup them.

Otherwise import the design into meshmixer and redo the topology of the model.
