Wanhao i3 Plus - one Z stepper doesnt stop on homing

Hi guys

I'm a new member with a doozey of a problem

Sometimes when homing, the right hand Z stepper doesn't stop when the left hand motor hits the end stop micro switch. The left hand  z stepper stops perfectly every time

You can hear the left stepper click and stop as it should, but not the right hand. The right side of the gantry just keeps going down !- eventually hitting the print plate and causing all sorts of damage

- Before this happens z gantry is calibrated and parallel to the build plate

- build plate has been levelled.

- this is not a bed levelling issue.

- There is no jamming occurring, its almost like the right z stepper doesn't get the 'stop' signal

- It only occurs say 1 in 10 times i try to home when setting up a print

- Apart from that , the printer is working pretty well

- I have opened up the box and all plugs etc seem to  be seated properly.

Help help help !

Cheers

Hayden

Wow, that's a new one.  They are normally ganged together off the same stepper driver which makes it impossible for them to do 2 separate motions.  The only thing that I can think is actually happening is that the left one only appears to be stopping because it is stalled against the micro switch while the right one continues to travel because it doesn't have a hard stop.  If this is the case then the real issue is that your micro switch end stop is faulty every 10th ish time as you state above and the Z axis is not finding the home point.  Swap the micro switch and see if that fixes it.  You can get new ones on Amazon that should fit and work.

Thanks heaps for the reply.

Yep, its crazy - i couldn't find anything similar on the web. Its unique ! ;)

You might be right. It doesn't 'look' like it though. I would have thought that the left gantry would just break off the micro switch if it didn't get the signal.

Next time it happens, i'll disconnect the right stepper and see if the left is still operating

I'll order a new microswitch now and see what happens !
