Hi all,

I’m trying to get a complex design printed. It’s like half a sphere with the round part downwards, small flat piece to make it stand. Cannot be printed upside down. The overhang starts pretty much straight away. I got it printed sucessfully at a professional company and could order here with loads of support material. Twice the amount of the design actually!

I know basically nothing about materials and printing, any suggestions?

Hi there! The best overhangs get printed with metal composite materials, these cool down very fast and therefore manage insane overhang angle, however that material is very expensive. Can you upload the model so that I can think about, if there’s another method to print that product. I would recommend PET materials like Colorfabb XT or Taulman3d T-Glase, but no normal plastic is outstandingly good for overhangs, it mostly matters, what printer/hub you choose. I could -most likely*- print the part for a fair price and with minimal support. Interested in printing a sphere with minimal support. My intention is to print a ball-in-socket. Imagine simple cylindrical supports 0.8mm thick. How many (how few possible) would it take? Anybody want to take a stab at printing this, let me know. I have no 3-d printer.

Newb, but trying to make a solid, strong, 1-piece solution. This will be moving 220+ lbs (100 kilos) underneath a pallet on a smooth concrete floor. The ball need not move, but I really, really want it to.

The only way that I can imagine is to minimize supports and hope I can twist and break them. Plan B is to just use as a sliding solution. Then if the supports break under stress, it’s no problem. See attached model (not yet clean) with several support “beams.”

What material to use? Other advice?

I would like to help you out with this project, I offer CAD services as well as 3d printing in a wide variety of materials. Some of the materials are high-strength industrial grade plastics. To survive a momentum, that moves over 100 kilos you have to go with such plastics. Other ones, like ABS or PLA (which are the most common) will surely break. Also some of the offered materials have a very smooth surface and are very good for slides, this is a very big problem with PLA, as it will sand down / wear out when it slides against itself (for example in transmissions).
